Where Oak Park Gathered
Velvet Rope served as a cultural icon within the Chicago suburbs. The venue broke down boundaries to deliver a first-rate ultra lounge experience. A place where the LGBTQ+ community and allies can come together to celebrate their diversity through cocktails made with purpose. From the legendary drag shows on weekends to the low-key conversation in the middle of week, the lounge was built to provide every patron with a high-end atmosphere of belonging. Although the door is now closed, the inclusive atmosphere developed at Velvet Rope will forever be a piece of Oak Parks social history.

Voices of the Velvet Rope
See what customers, artists, and friends said about the long-lasting impact of being part of our "Emerald Lights" family.
Velvet Rope wasn’t simply a bar – it was a place to be safe, to celebrate yourself and your identity, and to find your own little community or family. I built an entire decade of my life from the experiences and memories I made at Velvet Rope.
Marcus T., Patron (2006–2012)
I've performed at many bars as a resident performer for several years but nothing compared to the energy and the respect of being a part of Velvet Rope. They gave us a space where we could perform drag with true theatricality. That energy is unlike anything else – all of that love, acceptance, and pure joy was always present in every show.
